Transition To College Class

Do you have a high school senior who has ADHD and/or anxiety?

Are you concerned about their transition to college?

Do they need more help from you in their life and academics than you would expect at this stage?

Do they have difficulty performing consistently in school due lack of motivation?

Are they reluctant to ask for and use help?

Do they take their medication as prescribed?

If so, you and your student are invited to participate in the transition to college class I created just for you. The course has four sessions; three sessions for students who are seniors in high school, and one session for their parents.

What we will cover:

This first class will begin with a college readiness quiz and define what college readiness means. We will discuss necessary life skills, academic skills, and social-emotional readiness.

This class will be all about executive function. Using an online assessment tool your students’ will evaluate their executive function strengths and weaknesses. We will discuss some strategies to amplify their strong executive skills and compensate for those that are weaker.

This class is about campus resources and the importance of finding social groups. Each student will leave with a written plan to help them plug into campus resources quickly and easily.

This class is for parents only and will cover three topics:

  1. A summary of what was covered in the students’ classes.
  2. An overview of how to assess your student’s readiness for college, how to prepare for an easier transition and when to consider a gap year.
  3. How to emotionally support them and when to share your expectations of them academically and financially.

Here are a few things people have said about classes I’ve taught similar to this one:

College Readiness Workshop Participant

“This was a great presentation and very helpful for my husband and me as we try to determine college readiness for our ADHD son. It was very useful to understand the challenges that he will face in college and what issues may prevent his success. The clear communication of required skills and readiness assessments were excellent and will help us determine our son’s college timeline. Having this knowledge will help us make the best decision on how to launch his future college career.”

College Readiness Workshop Participant

Your talk gives me a realistic expectation for ADHD kids going on to college, and how parents can be supportive and guide them via the difficult transition. It is absolutely essential. Can not thank you more for that.

Gap Year Workshop Participant

Tina’s gap year workshop was helpful and practical in thinking about my child’s future after high school. Her calm demeanor is soothing to this stressed out parent. The session was very relevant to the current times and provided unique suggestions that we can use to have a meaningful conversation about a gap year. Very creative suggestions were provided on how to keep a gap year structured but still focused on your young adult’s interests.
